Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to financially support undergraduate students receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application, so that they can participate in Study Abroad programs they might not otherwise be able to afford. The award is to be applied to program tuition, room and board, required texts, transportation, insurance, airfare, and passport/visa fees.

Next Application Deadline: October 2026

The current application cycle will open in mid-August 2026 for applicants whose program starts between December 1, 2026, and October 31, 2027. This cycle encompasses programs that begin in Winter term 2026-27, Spring 2027, Maymester 2027, Summer 2027, Fall 2027, and Academic Year 2027-28.

The application deadline is Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 11:59pm Pacific Time, and the advisor certification deadline is Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

All applicants will be notified of their status via email in December 2026.

Eligibility

Gilman Scholars can only participate in study abroad or internships where they can earn credit if the country/location where the program takes place is on the U.S Department of State’s travel advisory list with a rating of Level 1 or Level 2. The scholars need to suit with that travel advisory before deciding to apply for funding and before they start their program.

Within countries listed at either travel advisory Level 1 or Level 2, there may be areas within those countries that carry a higher advisory of Level 3 or Level 4. Travel to those areas is not allowed. Gilman Scholars do not qualify to participate in a study abroad or internship program if either the country or location of the program is rated Level 3 or Level 4 by the U.S. Department of State.
