Grocery Stores/Supermarkets
Waco has several supermarkets where one can purchase food, kitchen supplies, paper goods, and health and beauty products. These stores include HEB, Aldi, Walmart, and others. HEB may deliver your purchases to your address for an additional fee, if you use the store’s app or website to shop and select “delivery” at checkout. (Aldi does not have a delivery service.)
Grocery stores are not within walking distance of campus; however, here are a few transportation options:
- Baylor HEB Shuttle: Baylor’s Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) takes students to HEB once a week. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The shuttle leaves from the 5th Street Circle every Friday at 3:30. The link to register is in the BU World Weekly emails sent out by ISSS.
- Waco Transit Bus: Students can take Waco transit from Baylor to HEB at various times Monday through Saturday using a $3 bus pass, which is good for unlimited rides for one day. More information about this option can be found here. Pick up a free bus pass from The Center for Global Engagement (CGE). Supplies are limited.
- Ride with Friends: Many students find that friends with cars are more than happy to help students get to the grocery store.
Monthly Free Food Distribution
The Shepherd’s Heart is a community agency that provides and distributes food, free of cost, around Waco each month for those who need additional sources of food. The distribution usually includes both canned goods and fresh fruits and vegetables. Below are the locations:
- First Friday of Each Month, 3pm-4pm – Waco Transit Center at the Waco Bus Station
- Third Saturday of Each Month, 10am-11am – Baylor University campus (7th & James Baptist Church 601 Bagby Ave.)
The locations listed above are the closest to Baylor campus. Click here to see the monthly calendar with all distribution information.
On-Campus Food Assistance
For students who are experiencing temporary financial difficulties that make paying for food difficult, Baylor University has a resource called The Store. The Store has basic food items to supplement meals. The Store is not a long-term or permanent option. If the primary issue is finding transportation to the supermarket/grocery store, pick up a free one-day bus pass from CGE. International students who face serious financial difficulties that result in food shortage, should talk with a ISSS staff member in the CGE Office.
Special Note for Graduate Students: Graduate Students can now use their Baylor ID Card to eat in the dining halls on-campus for the Baylor faculty/staff rate of $5.50 per meal.
