Academic Training
Academic Training (AT) is the option provided to J-1 students to gain employment experience that complements their program of study in the United States. Therefore, the employment must be directly related to the student’s field of study, and it must be commensurate with their level of education. Students may engage in AT during their academic program and/or after the completion of the program as long as the total training does not exceed the time limits prescribed by the Department of State.
There are two types of AT: Pre-completion AT and Post-completion AT. Pre-completion AT is used for off campus jobs or internships during the program of study. The student may work for up to 20 hours per week during school hours and full time during official school vacations. Post-completion AT is used for employment after completion of program of study. For most students, that means after graduation. It must be requested for either on-campus or off-campus work for you to remain in the US after the end of your program. You may also combine pre and post completion AT.
All J-1 students wishing to gain off campus work experience during and/or after the completion of their studies must apply for and receive Academic Training authorization from ISSS prior to starting their work or internship.
Eligibility
To qualify for AT authorization, the student must be in good academic standing and have a job or internship offer that is directly related to the field of study and commensurate with the level of education
Prescribed Time Limits
- Undergraduate students and Master students who have been in the US in J-1 status for at least 18 months or more are eligible for a maximum of 18 months of AT.
- Doctoral students are eligible for up to 36 months of AT, of which only 18 months may be used before the completion of studies.
Application Process
First you must obtain a job offer in the US that is directly related to your field of study and commensurate with your level of education. Once you receive the offer, make an appointment with the Responsible Officer (RO) in ISSS to process the request.
