Social Security Card
Overview
A social security number (SSN) is a unique 9-digit number used for taxpayer identification, income reporting, and record-keeping purposes. Once issued, the number is valid for a lifetime. You should keep it safe and provide only as needed to U.S. government agencies or credible financial institutions. F-1 and J-1 students who are authorized for employment are eligible to apply for the SSN.
Students working on-campus do not have to wait to be issued the Social Security Card to begin working but should apply for it as soon as possible.
How to Request a Social Security Card
You may be able to apply for the Social Security card, or at least start your application on the Social Security Administration (SSA) website – and, if necessary, use our online scheduling tool to book an appointment at a local office.
