First Year International Program: Transition to the U.S. University
Baylor University requires all incoming F-1 undergraduate students to complete the First Year International Program: Transition to the U.S. University during their first semester at Baylor. International students with other statuses may complete this program but it is not required. This program helps students develop clear academic expectations of their role and their professors, as well as become familiar with western teaching methods, classroom etiquette, successful learning strategies and campus support resources.
To complete the program, international students must select ONE of the two options listed below, the course or the workshop series:
- GBL 1205: Transition to the U.S. University (for New International Students)
This 2-credit course with multiple sections also meets NSE New Student Experience) requirements. The course will be part of your regular schedule and count towards your required credit hour enrollment. It is designed to provide the highest level of support for new students.
- Transition to the U.S. University Workshops
The workshop series is designed for those who cannot fit the course into their academic schedule. Students must attend 6 of 8 workshops during the fall semester at Baylor. Workshops are on Thursday evenings from 5:30pm-7:00pm from August 29 – October 17. In-person attendance is required.
When students begin working with their Academic Advisor, they will notice that they have already been pre-registered for a section of the GBL 1205 course in their schedule. As they plan their schedule, they may want to move to a different section of the course (different day and time, depending on other courses). Their Academic Advisor can help with this. Students can also choose to withdraw from the course completely if it does not fit with their schedule; however, if they do that, they will be required to attend the weekly workshops.
