How Baylor’s Certificate in Global Engagement Develops Globally Competent Leaders

The world Baylor graduates enter will not be defined by borders. Engineers will collaborate across continents. Nurses will care for patients from different cultural backgrounds. Business professionals will navigate global markets. Educators will lead increasingly diverse classrooms. Researchers will work alongside colleagues from around the world to address challenges that no single country can solve alone.

In that world, global competence is no longer an optional skill or a specialty reserved for students who study international relations. It is part of being prepared for the future.

Rather than viewing global engagement as an isolated activity, Baylor University has created a structured developmental model that integrates international learning throughout a student's undergraduate experience: the Certificate in Global Engagement. The Certificate is more than a co-curricular credential. It is an intentional process designed to help students understand the world, engage across difference and develop the character and competencies needed to contribute meaningfully within it.

Forming Responsible Global Citizens

At the heart of the Certificate is a simple but consequential idea: global citizenship is not simply about knowing more about other countries. It is about learning how to engage people and communities with humility, curiosity and purpose.

Responsible global citizenship requires students to recognize what they do not yet understand. It asks them to examine their own assumptions, engage cultural differences without imposing their own perspectives and recognize the dignity and agency of communities beyond their own. Through the Certificate, students develop intercultural humility by learning to build trust across cultural boundaries rather than erase differences. They develop global systems literacy by examining how international institutions, governance structures and geopolitical forces shape people's lives. They practice reflection by considering how their own experiences and assumptions influence the way they understand the world, and they cultivate cross-cultural empathy rooted not simply in perspective-taking, but in genuine curiosity about the experiences of others.

These are sometimes described as “soft skills.” They are anything but. In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to communicate across cultures, navigate complexity, build relationships and lead with humility is foundational to effective leadership.

Global Competence for Every Major

Baylor's approach is intentionally university-wide. The Certificate is open to students from every undergraduate major and brings together students from all eight academic colleges and schools. That interdisciplinary community reflects a central belief behind the program: global engagement is not a specialty interest. It is part of a well-rounded Baylor education.

A future engineer may find themselves working on an international team. A nurse may provide culturally responsive care to a patient whose background differs significantly from their own. A business graduate may work across international markets, while an educator may prepare students for an increasingly diverse classroom. Whatever their profession, Baylor graduates will encounter people whose experiences, assumptions and perspectives differ from their own. The Certificate gives students a framework for preparing for those encounters intentionally.

From Exposure to Transformation

There is a meaningful difference between exposure and transformation. Exposure introduces students to different cultures and perspectives; transformation changes how students see—and how they act on what they see. The Certificate is intentionally designed to move students across that threshold.

The process begins in the classroom, where globally focused coursework asks students to engage complex questions and broaden their understanding of the world. Then learning moves beyond the classroom. Students can apply what they are learning through study abroad, international fieldwork, internships, research, service-learning, missions and other globally focused experiences. In these settings, academic ideas are tested against real-world experiences and relationships.

Students may encounter perspectives that challenge their assumptions or discover that a problem they thought they understood looks very different from another cultural perspective. They may realize that meaningful service requires listening before acting. They are then encouraged to reflect on those experiences—to consider not only what they learned about the world, but what they learned about themselves.

That reflection is what connects individual experiences into lasting personal and professional growth.

Learning That Leads to Leadership

Global engagement becomes most meaningful when students begin to see themselves not simply as visitors in another culture, but as participants in a shared world. The Certificate encourages students to approach international engagement through partnership rather than paternalism.

That distinction matters. Students learn to collaborate with communities rather than simply serve them, recognizing the knowledge, dignity and agency that every community brings. They develop the confidence to lead alongside others rather than assuming they must lead for them.

Over time, these experiences cultivate intercultural communication, ethical leadership, critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving—competencies increasingly valued by employers, graduate programs and communities around the world. The result is not simply a student who has traveled internationally, but a graduate who has learned how to enter unfamiliar spaces with humility, build relationships across difference and remain open to being changed by what they encounter.

Growing With Purpose

The continued growth of the Certificate reflects Baylor's commitment to listening to students and improving the program over time. Program assessment identified opportunities to simplify enrollment, clarify requirements, strengthen reflection and improve access. In response, the Center for Global Engagement streamlined the Certificate experience while maintaining its academic rigor and developmental focus.

The result has been significant growth. Certificate enrollment reached a record 363 students in 2024, while the number of students completing the Certificate increased from 37 to 54 in one year—a 45% increase in program completion.

The momentum continued. Enrollment climbed again from 363 to 420 students, a 15.7% increase, with 34 students completing the program in 2025–2026. Today, the program serves students representing all eight academic colleges and schools, demonstrating that global learning has moved well beyond a niche offering and become a meaningful part of the Baylor undergraduate experience.

That sustained growth is significant not simply because more students are enrolling. It suggests that students increasingly recognize global competence as part of the education they need for the world they are entering.

A University-Wide Invitation

The world does not need more passive observers of global challenges. It needs graduates who are willing to understand those challenges, engage them across cultural differences and contribute to meaningful solutions.

That kind of leadership begins with preparation.

The Certificate in Global Engagement offers students an intentional pathway to develop the competencies, character and perspective needed to engage an interconnected world thoughtfully. The Center for Global Engagement provides the pathways, partnerships and community. Students bring the curiosity. Their experiences provide the challenge. Reflection turns those experiences into learning, and over time, that learning becomes a way of seeing and engaging the world.

Pro Mundo in Practice

The Certificate in Global Engagement is one of Baylor University's clearest expressions of Pro Mundo—“For the World.” It represents a belief that preparing students for the world is not simply about sending them somewhere. It is about helping them understand how to be there.

By combining academic learning, intercultural engagement, international experiences and intentional reflection, the Certificate prepares students not only to understand a complex and interconnected world, but to contribute to it with wisdom, compassion and courage.

The ultimate goal is not to produce students who have simply seen more of the world.

It is to develop graduates who are prepared to engage it—with curiosity, humility and purpose, and with the conviction that wherever their lives and careers take them, they have a responsibility and an opportunity to make the world better through the way they learn, lead and serve.
