The Mission Waco Poverty Simulation: Experiencing Systemic Poverty
As part of Baylor University’s Certificate in Global Engagement, students gain a unique opportunity to understand systemic poverty firsthand through the Mission Waco Poverty Simulation. This immersive experience challenges participants to make the difficult choices faced by individuals and families living in economic hardship, choices often driven by structural inequities, not personal shortcomings.
Working with Mission Waco, a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering the community, students navigate simulated barriers to housing, employment, transportation, healthcare, and food security. This controlled environment provides a powerful, reflective learning opportunity. The simulation isn't just an activity; it's a direct appeal to develop empathy, civic responsibility, and global citizenship.
This initiative reinforces Baylor’s dedication to developing globally minded leaders who recognize that justice starts locally. For many, the poverty simulation is a significant turning point, fueling their commitment to service, enhancing their cultural humility, and inspiring ongoing, ethical community engagement.
Come learn not just about poverty, but with and through those most impacted.
